Chapter 13

Elena

Jim was livid with me for the way I acted. My punishment has been to not share his bed until I can show respect to our family. It’s no punishment to me and I continue to protect the children and talk back to Kristina. Each day her anger towards me grows. The children and other wives have been instructed to not speak to me, but Abi defies that order when no one else is around. Those moments are few and far between, but it gives me a little relief from the silence and loneliness that has taken ahold of me. I slip into a deep depression, only enjoying the moments that I can make my sister wife angry. Everything she throws at me is like a lifesaver in the middle of an ocean. I don’t care if it’s a physical slap or a verbal one. Just feeling something, anything, is what I live for now. I’m not sure how long our standoff will last, only that I can’t stop it now. I have a purpose that I will not back down from.

I stop her every single time she tries to hurt Fredrick, which she does more often now. She knows he is my weakness, and, in her eyes, he is not worth anything more than being her tool to attempt to torture me. I’ve been the recipient of many cracks on the back or arm when I physically block her from hurting him with her stick. My back still has not healed but I don’t care. The pain is numb just like the rest of me.

“I will make sure my husband gets rid of you,” she sneers at me when I start laughing loudly so that the children don’t have to be subject to her screaming again. “I will make sure that you become a pariah in this community. You will never make it to the celestial kingdom when no man will want to be attached to a disobedient sinner like you.”

I shrug, “God has plans for me. I would worry about your own soul if I were you. Only evil people feel the need to beat their children into compliance.”

“Obviously your father’s beatings weren’t enough to teach you our covenants,” she tries to poke at me like a child.

She’s pushed me far enough that her words no longer influence me. What would make me freeze up when I first came here is now nothing more than a gnat. “I’m not the one who acts like the devil possessed,” I sing-song right before Jim comes through the door.

Her whole demeanor changes and she smiles broadly at our husband. “Welcome home husband,” she greets him in a sickly-sweet voice. “I will get you your refreshments and once you relax from your long day we can talk about Elena’s behavior.”

His face contorts and he growls at me, “What have you done this time?”

Two can play at this game. “I’ve done nothing wrong,” I say sweetly. “I’ve only followed our Lord’s directions to raise our children in the way that he wants us to.
